Introduction to the Alcohol and Other Drug Sector Workshop

Course Overview

It is vital that staff have the skills, knowledge and awareness to effectively work with and assist offenders to change their drug and alcohol use.

The Introduction to the Alcohol and Other Drug Sector Workshop aims to provide learners with an overview of the AOD sector, related issues and basic skills to assess, interview and use Motivational Interviewing techniques to promote change.

In addition to developing an understanding of the issues associated with the abuse of alcohol and other drugs, this workshop will assist learners in working with offenders who abuse these substances, through; identifying their needs as well as developing and reviewing appropriate intervention strategies.

Course OutcomesIn addition to developing an understanding of the issues associated with the abuse of alcohol and other drugs, this workshop will assist learners in working with offenders who abuse these substances, through; identifying their needs as well as developing and reviewing appropriate intervention strategies.

On completion of this workshop, you will be eligible to enrol in the Introduction to the Alcohol and Other Drug Sector Assessment which is aligned to the Unit of Competency CSCINT013 Assist offenders to change drug and alcohol use in partial completion of the CSC40122 Certificate IV in Correctional Practice.
Entry requirementsOpen to all staff who work with offenders who experience challenges with drug and alcohol use.

This workshop will require completion of the following;

  • Prerequisite online component (30 minutes)
  • Face-to-face / Virtual attendance (2 days)
